Oh man, I'm not sure, but I suspect that's a long fucking list. Well I do know for sure Jefferson, Madison and Monroe owned slaves. Though I excuse Jefferson for having the decency to fuck his slaves good.

I know some stuff about historical presidents, but probably not enough to judge fairly how well they did. As far as presidents in my lifetime, definitely Bush .Jr, without a doubt.

Definitely Bush Jr. or Reagan
I'm pissed about how little Obama has done and how many promises he broke, but he hasn't made anything worse. I'm voting 3rd party next year if anyone but Perry gets the GOP nomination. If Perry gets nominated I will vote for Obama.

The economy is no worse than it was in 2008.
The war in Afghanistan is no different than it was in 2008.
No progress has been made since 2008.
No progress has been lost since 2008.
Nothing has changed, because Obama is a fucking appeaser and compromises on everything. We're exactly where we were when Bush left office. He didn't make anything worse, but he hasn't made anything better, either.

Imagine Hitler's son succeeded him. Hitler Jr also killed 6 million Jews. Could one really say that things are no better, but no worse?
I just don't see how you could consider Reagan to be a worse presiden than Lincoln.
Anonymous N replied with this 15 years ago, 8 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^][v]#217,064
Reagan's economic model, that was also followed by Bush Sr. and Jr. has done more lasting damage to the economy than anything else, not to mention cost American citizens tons of jobs and given the large corporations way too much power and way too little accountability.
Lincoln freed the slaves, and he was not personally responsible for casualties of the Civil War. I'm rusty on my US history so I can't talk more about Lincoln, but I never said anything about him.
Reagan was a horrible president for the lasting damage he did to the economy. The Bush's were horrible presidents for waging pointless wars and being whores to the special interests.
I can't call Obama a horrible president or a good president, because he hasn't done a goddamn thing. I'll call him a weak president, an appeaser, and the biggest disappointment in my lifetime. I wasn't disappointed by Bush because I knew he would be terrible, but Obama convinced the entire nation that he would bring about change, and he hasn't done a fucking thing.

How old are you?
Neocons are bad, but no worse than prowar democrats.
I don't think your criticisms are wrong; but from your emphasis I think I have assumed your solutions to be wrong.

I'm 25. I was 14 when Al Gore was elected and Bush usurped the presidency. I was disappointed because of that, but I knew for sure Bush was going to be a disaster, and nothing surprised me.
> but from your emphasis I think I have assumed your solutions to be wrong.
Solutions?
Also, I disagree with you about neocons being no worse than pro-war democrats. Neocons have a fucked up and oppressive social policy, as well as an economic policy that only benefits corporations and special interest groups, while completely ripping off the working class. Neocons and Reagan style economics are the main reason the middle class no longer exists. Democrats have their own self serving agenda too, but they don't strive for the same level of social oppression that neocons do.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but you were 14. You had no clue about politics. Let's be honest now. You knew very little about George Bush and his policies, or what effect they would have.
I inferred from your emphasis what you would likely posit to be the solutions to the problems you mentioned.
Economic and social policy are not two separate areas. There is no absolute point delineating the two. The only difference between neocons and prowar democrats is their speeches - their governments and policies are the same.
Anonymous N replied with this 15 years ago, 15 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^][v]#217,080
I was 22 when Bush left office. I knew plenty about his policies. Also, I don't have any solutions to those problems, and I'm not pretending to. Everything has complications, and frankly my opinions are insignificant. Assuming that I think I have solutions is tantamount to putting words in my mouth.
> Economic and social policy are not two separate areas.
Aside from the obvious financial contributions from special interest groups for politicians pushing their agendas, what effect would the legal status of gay marriage or abortion have on the economy?
Other social issues, such as drugs, are inextricably tied to the economy, and I won't dispute that. The legal status of marijuana plays a large part in our economy, from the costs of enforcing said laws to the potential economic growth legalization and taxation could bring.
> You knew very little about George Bush and his policies, or what effect they would have.
George Bush didn't really have policies. He was a puppet of Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, et. al. Their policies were all about making themselves and their buddies rich and gaining support of the masses through manufacturing fear. Not only that, but, they completely failed. They didn't invade Afghanistan to retaliate for 9/11, they did it because of Afghanistan's mineral resources, and they totally screwed up.
This is a stimulating conversation, don't get me wrong, but I'm fucking tired. I'll bump this thread tomorrow if you wanna continue this. It kind of makes me want to brush up on Reagan's invasion of Grenada, which wasn't done to rescue American medical students.

I am not disputing that you know about politics now; merely your claim that you knew Bush was going to fail before he was elected.
(N.B. I am being facetious here) Gay marriage would allow gay weddings, on which large amounts of money would probably be spread; the decision would likely affect government spending on these couples &c. Legal status of abortion would likewise affect government funding of the procedure and impacts on the profitability of family planning centres; it would lead to a black market revival of the practise, which often attracts criminal gangs and finances their activities &c.
If we attempt to define a subset of social interactions as "economic" because they involve money, we still run into problems (others would not describe it as a problem; the Federal government gains much of it's power from a very broad definition of the Commerce Clause). I am merely arguing that all social interactions, whether they include exchange of currency, exchange of goods, exchange of words, exchange of bodily fluids, should not be legislated against: unless this interaction violates the will of one of the parties involved.
From what I understand (could be wrong) Bush was set to be another boring president; his pre-election speeches condemned interventionist foreign policy and "nation-building". However, 9-11 happened and these would become the trademarks of his administration. I honestly don't know how he got reelected.
