I'm sure that is part of it, but also it is people who believe that everyone should follow their own worldview, due to some distorted sense of superiority. This is often seen with religious folk, who are openly hateful towards those they see as less "godly" than themselves. What less godly means is entirely up to the individual's interpretation, allowing for a wide range of targets for their bigotry.

I'd be curious to know the stats on that, I find it hard to believe that "most" gay people would follow a religion whose teachings often indicate that their mere existence is an affront to god.
