They already invaded a sovereign nation. Even if they are incompetent, that does not mean Putin won't do it anyway. He's quite unstable.
He's not at all unstable, in fact he is very cunning and calculated.
If he invaded NATO, it would start with Lithuania and the other countries in that region. You've heard the expression "the United States would not trade New York for paris", but equally France would not trade Paris for Vilnius.
Besides which he wouldn't do anything if Trump wins. He's afraid of Trump.

NATO is operated and financed by the US. If the US withdrew it would be the end of NATO in all but name. EU countries would already have mutual security pacts and without us financing wouldn't have any reason to be in a superfluous organization.
Something might carry on the name but it wouldn't play the same role in the world order, it would be an artifact.
