Not Erik, but I can probably answer. Globe trotting kids, whether trust funders, college brats, cryptobros, or music festival clowns tend to be annoying.

I know right? They go visit a place and make it a lifestyle. At least he didn't go to bumfuck, then he'd be bumfuck Jay.
I do think he was annoying based on his willingness to set off on an 11 hour hike through the mountains with no water, despite having and using Google Maps at the start which would have told him how long it would take - if he used the "Directions" feature.

Do we know he used Google Maps? Maybe he used Apple Maps and was led off a cliff.
But yeah, he only said that he was walking back. The "he decided to walk the 10-hour journey back" is journalists' interpolation. He probably expected to get a lift or catch a bus on the way, once he peeled himself off the cactus and found a main road.
Why didn't he wait until 10 for the bus? Maybe he was impatient and thought "fuck that", that's why he was seen walking fast on the path out, he was anger walking.
