I haven't watched it in a while but I picked up the new season and Frenchie is apparently into fucking men in dirty bathrooms now. But I thought there was a romance plot between him and the mute Japanese chick? What happened?

I don't think there was any kind of build-up or hints to it, really. I watched all of the previous seasons and never noticed any, and a lot of people online are saying it kind of just abruptly happens.
The earlier seasons were way better, IMO, when it was all about this group of regular guys trying to take down powerful and corrupt superheroes. They're outmatched, so they have to do things like shove a bomb up a guy's ass because his skin is bulletproof. Fun stuff.
...But at some point, I guess in season 3, they kind of lost that and the writers seemed to become more interested in making the show an allegory for modern US politics. Homelander becomes a very obvious stand-in for Trump, there's a lot of shitting on Trump-style populism. While I agree with those politics, I don't like that it was done in such a ham-fisted way and that it took away from that earlier tone the show had.
So I suppose Frenchie suddenly having gay sex is an extension of that problem, possibly. They put it in because they liked the idea, but the abruptness of it annoyed some people.

To be fair though in the comics Homelander does lead a coup of the US government, so I suppose from that perspective the TV adaptation is probably building up to something similar, but in its own way. Still, though, I'm unsure if that was the best way to do it.
Unfortunately there is a scene where the mute Japanese chick specifically says there is nothing between them, so he should go get Connor's dick, or ass.
That is true. However Kimiko was very clear that they are not a couple, which clashes with my memories of early seasons where they grew emotionally close.
Anyway it's very abrupt to go from will they won't they with a lady to fucking a man in a dirty bathroom.

He was in a throuple with his friend who OD'd and that woman. He also on a few occasions made jokes about enjoying non-hetero sex. Also he's fucking French. I wasn't expecting a gay sex plot but it wasn't exactly shocking.
Sure, it made sense for him. The one in the show had a bunch of exposition about his origin with soldier boy and then got falcon punched to "subvert expectations" or whatever.
Get fucked I wanted him and soldier boy to get fighting
