Topic: Merrin here. Upon my 2nd re-read, I've concluded 11/22/63 is King's masterpiece.

It's a basically flawless book that hits on every emotion. The only other 2 contenders for his magnum opus, in my opinion, would be IT and The Stand. IT is an almost perfect book but it contains That Scene Which We Do Not Speak About, which holds it back somewhat. And while The Stand is probably still my favourite book of his...hand of God ending. So yeah. Not exactly without flaws.

The series was better.

It has a few unspeakable scenes imo

My favorite books by him are

The Long Walk, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Dolores Claiborne, Geralds Game. The Eyes of the Dragon, and It. I really need to read 11/22/63

I also haven't enjoyed much of his sober work

'Salem's Lot is far superior. Thanks.

Yeah, I certainly agree with this. Peak King was when he was, well, peaking. That said there are still a few decent sober ones, alongside 11/22/63. Revival has one of the bleakest endings I've ever read in a work of fiction. Fairy Tale was a fun romp. The first 2 volumes in the Bill Hodges trilogy (Mr Mercedes and Finders Keepers) are excellent (the 3rd, End of Watch, was bad). Doctor Sleep is also very good. I hated Lisey's Story when it came out, but a 10+ year marriage and a kid later, I connect with it much more.

Great novel but shitfaced when he wrote it.
