I can't pinpoint the exact shift, but at some point everyone became an asshole, not just the standard couple of town assholes you could safely ignore. I would not die for my neighbors at this point, they're all entitled fucks. It's not even about government pulling strings at this point (post 9/11 and Snowden it's a given).
