Yes, the self-identified political left are on campuses, posting on twitter, and bitching to anyone around them that Israel is committing genocide by responding to the October 7th attacks. As a group they are constantly avoiding the very simple question "What should have Israel done instead?"
If you were an advisor in the Israeli government, aware of the past support the government gave to Hamas, and the Oct. 7 attack just occurred, what would you suggest? Hindsight is 20-20, but you can't roll back the clock and cut support to Hamas, and if you do nothing then the Iranian-backed militia is going to keep gaining ground and killing thousands more.
What is your answer in that situation? Can you give a clear answer, or is the only thing that comes to your mind some way of dodging the question like "I'd tell you what I WOULDN'T do!".

That's exactly what it's about, the campus protests are a direct response to Israel's actions in Gaza in response to the October 7th attack.

That will get you shot or blown up when you don't have to. Their HQ was under the hospital. How many soldiers are you losing laying seige to a hospital, and trying to clear it floor by floor? How do you tell the civilians from the Hamas operatives who put their gun under a blanket and played sick on a bed? Hamas already proved they'd hide in a hospital, they won't draw the line at laying on a gurney to ambush the jew who just broke in.
Those tunnels were connected to other buildings. So while their guys outside stall for time, the important commanders and irreplaceable technicians are being scurried away. Hamas choose a new base of operations with minimal losses and the IDF starts making payouts to the families of the lost soldiers. Brilliant strategic move.
The IDF is in a situation where it would make sense to have higher than average civilian casualties, but still manage to be below average in civilian death rate for urban conflicts.
What do you want the IDF to change, specifically? Adopt failing strategies, apologize for ever making Israel, and move west? The IDF is the security force that lets queer people exist. It's protecting a government that holds elections. An anarcho-communist utopia won't spontaneously form, the fundamentalists hiding in hospitals are not a good alternative. It's either the IDF or them.
