Topic: $15 minimum wage (USA) is no longer even enough to survive

Anonymous A started this discussion 1 year ago #117,819

Stupid ass Republicans have been arguing about $15/hour and blocking it for so damn long that it's no longer the lowest needed to survive. Now, the minimum wage needs to be about $25/hour. Stupid ass Republicans hate the poor.

That's exactly right, we need monetary instability and inflation so the numbers on our paychecks are bigger.

Anything but taking out the subtractions on the economy. The government can take materials and labor out across economy for no real costs because it's all made up!

The economy can absolutely absorb a higher minimum wage. And people earning it would have more buying power, which would help the economy.

@previous (A)
It can absorb it by adding inflation.

The extra buying power is just bigger numbers that get matched by bigger numbers elsewhere.

Credits have value because they are rare. The minimum wage debate is to distract you from seizing the land and machines. Cut the labor force back in half by sequestering the kooks. Increase prison labor so prices come down. Red tape is most of the housing cost, and it's just there to give landlords a hand around your throat.

Nah. Corporations like McDonald's can easily afford it. And why don't the high salaries of CEOs ever get blamed for inflation? It's all bullshit. Raise the minimum wage.

They can easily afford it by raising prices, which people will be able to pay with their new raises.

Nothing about the power dynamic changed.

They won't need to make up for it with price increases that match the increase in wages, so it's beneficial overall. When wages are increased in real life, this isn't a problem.

@previous (C)
The only works when labor unions are so widespread and powerful that they can effectively set the wages at a decent level.

It works immediately. It's already illegal to use force to coerce labor. If I want to work for $3 per hour like disabled persons currently have the right to do, that's between me and my potential employer. Stay out of it.

When payroll goes up, and their supplier's payroll goes up, they have to get the money from somewhere.

Raising the minimum wage would be the end of humans in the workforce.

Exactly. Raising the minimum wage has zero benefit to the people. It should be abolished. Even if these "Fight for $25" idiots truly believe that it would benefit anyone, they need to realize that it cannot ever benefit those who are not currently employed. They're trying to pull up the ladder behind themselves. Short sighted "got mine" attitudes with these folk.

Imagine simping for a multi billion dollar corporation
They don't have to raise prices. If the CEO whose entire net worth is built on the labor of other people only took home enough to buy 3 new yachts every year instead of 12, they could cover the increased wages. But gosh that'd be terrible wouldn't it? The slightest inconvenience to one person in exchange for changing the lives of thousands for the better? That isn't freedom

That's not what will happen. The number on paychecks today is a lot more than the days when the union boys could buy a house, but it means nothing.

Corporations will do just fine by passing the costs on. You are buying into a strategy that will fail.

Many neolibs want a higher minimum wage so only the whites can get these jobs, while barring bipoc bodies from mutual trade of labor.

If you have to pay exorbitant wages you might as well hire the better fed applicant who has a car and some connections. For filipinos, it means joining the informal economy and experiencing even worse working conditions because no corporation can justify the expense.

Essential job? Come on. So?? It doesn't mean you have to work at them for God's sake! There are many paying jobs a lot more than 15 bucks an hour. Even school bus drivers start out at more than minimum. Facts are facts. There has never been a time in America when a person could live off of the minimum wage no matter what it was. They are nothing more than a supplimentary income just like social security, if you plan on living off SS you are not facing reakity. Never has social security been considered a retirement. It is nothing more than a suppliment for your retirement. Better face facts and starts worrying more about advancing in your career because I guarantee you the minimum wage is not going to catch up to you while you fuck around with those kind of jobs. That is reality.

So?? Does that mean you have to do that? Of course not. People bitching about minimum wage are people who can't or won't get out and work a good job or they aren't qualified to work one. And that isn't minimum wage's fault. It is their own fuck up in life.

> Minimum wage was designed to be the minimum a person can live on. And "just get a better job" is stupid advice. If people could do that, they would.

Since when was its designed for that?? So say even if it was. You can look back on the numbers. Do you want to live your life at a minimum wage job? After I got out of high school I never worked a minimum wage job again. Why?? Because they don't pay enough. Instead of complaining on a forum where nobody gives a fuck and it won't make a difference anyhow, why don't you spend some effort in landing a good job. What can you do? A UPS driver now makes $49 an hour, they have good benefits and retirement. They syart you out at $28 an hour Or go to Roto Rooter, they hire apprentences on at $26 an hour.Maybe become a plumber. Within 5 years you can make $40 an hour. And that goes for about any plumbing company. On go out on your own subbing out you can make upwards of $60 an hour now. Find something you can do and just do it instead of whinning about something you aren't going to change.. There are plenty of good paying jobs out there starting at $25 an hour if you are willing to work. The government isn't going to raise the wage to fit your needs you are going to have to do that yourself.
