Topic: USAmerican here, is it normal to tip the bus driver in the UK?

Indie the Grate started this discussion 1 year ago #117,231

Native of Lafayette, Louisiana in London for a week. I was on the bus today with some friends and family and when we got off I tipped the bus driver £0.60 (20% of the trip). I wasn’t trying to make a big deal of it, but he seemed surprised when he opened the bus cabin door. He ended up taking the money, but my British friend who was showing us around noticed and kept asking what I was doing. After I told him I thought the flight was weird, he told me it was inappropriate. I don’t see the big deal. It’s pretty normal to tip the bus driver in the US and it’s not like I was banging on the door trying to tip him in between stops, which is what I imagine you could have done before the tragedy that unfolded on 7/7. My British friend won’t let it go, and he even brought it up to some girls and the bar and they laughed at me and walked away. Please tell me I’m not going crazy, and that it’s fairly normal to tip the bus driver, at least as a tourist.

Well if your British friend already gave you an answer you best listen to him. In the US I have never tipped a public bus driver. Cabbies, Uber, tour bus and airport shuttles yes, but never public transport.

You don't tip your bus driver, and if you did you should tip him more than £0.60.
