He coined the phrase but was, at the time, referring to shared cultural ideas and the way they spread. He wasn't talking about the internet. I started memes on Prodigy back in 1991 when i called a guy a retard and then erryone started doing it. I was a big trend setter back in high school, so, it didn't come as a shock.

My friend Russell was the first person to call somone a fag on the internet, too. But when he said it he didn't mean it as a sexual slur, he used it as a generic insult, which is its popular use today. So, he started that.
