It’s a gimmick like cryptocurrency.
The government is going to be forced to pass Universal Basic Income or else face the wrath of several starving people.

Bitcoin is becoming the official currency of multiple countries, and BRICS is creating a cryptocurrency for trade between the member states (25% of global GDP).
AI can already create photorealistic images, write simple apps, make a song, and answer a telephone call with a lifelike voice.

Sure, but that will be because all their jobs were automated by AI.

To answer your question, yes, the US has done a lot to develop the technology needed to allow humans to be productive, but we haven't done much to help the working class. The US has a very low standard of living compared to most other Westerncountries. It didn't have the same degree of economic growth as other countries; it's just that the rest of the Western world was ahead of it. Now, the US is no longer a center of production (they're still in the top 3, though, and the US isn't really world famous at all) and their manufacturing base has been decimated by trade. China could take a page out of our book and start a program to train some of the underclass.
You don't like the US? Great! I'm sure that China could use the population growth if that was the case.

It's already annoying at work, they installed a bot to streamline workflow so nobody is reading the work project space (I don't anymore, who wants to read bot poop?). Management already hired a consulting firm and we had to explain what we do and we should still have a job to an online questionaire - I haven't heard back but it's obvious they are increasing the workload on certain people and departments so it will be less shocking when people start vanishing. I have noticed that my department has been depreciated so we'll absolutely have a partial cut. They could hire some kid at half the pay and save some money in my case, so I'm going to start socking away money now for the inevitable.
