It's a fine story about a man who ignored the new boss and kept on and did it and the company has made billions but the dude ultimately didn't get a whole lot from the company but whatever he got a Nobel prize and does a lot on his own business these days.

Depending on the terms of employment, it doesn't matter and they can own the work even if you do it on your own time. This is common. It's also how it works if you are employed by a university.
