It had everything to do with it, being that it used the exact same pattern of logical deduction. Having multiple careers has nothing to do with being an alcoholic. End of story. Sorry that you disagree with that.

The "Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union," issued on December 24, 1860 explicitly mentioned protecting the institution of slavery as one of the main reasons for secession.
Other states that seceded, such as Mississippi, Georgia, and Texas, also issued similar declarations that mentioned safeguarding slavery as a key motivation for leaving the Union.
