Or if you're willing to give desktops a try I'm saving up for a Dell® Inspiron™ 620, which is a good deal, but there's always a chance you could afford the Dell® XPS™ 8300, which is pretty damn amazing.

To watch a full 1080P, you need a monitor with a 1920x1080 resolution. Go to Newegg, specify that screen resolution, and see what comes up. There probably aren't many, and they are going to be expensive.
Most laptops have a resolution of either 1366x768, or 1600x900. Both of these resolutions will support 720p and 1080i HD, they just won't support a 1080p. It might be cheaper to just buy a 1080p monitor and hook a laptop up to it. Also, you'll probably want a laptop with a BluRay player, since that's the only way to watch movies in a true 1080p.

The 15 MLK barely scrapes budget, but I'm not sure it's the one for me, it looks a bit bulky. Unfortunately, both the others are apparently discontinued :( (Which is a damn shame, since the Inspiron 17R would have been perfect. It looks like Dell no longer sells 17" laptops.
I wouldn't mind a decent desktop, but alas, I've no desk on which to place it. FYI, the USD and AUD are much the same at the moment.

I think the cost of living is different in America... IKEA desks cost like, more than that for just the shitty ones, and it wouldn't match my furniture, since I don't normally shop at IKEA. Also, I sort of hope IKEA stands for something otherwise I feel silly capitalising it every time.

Most rips are compressed/reduced in quality in one way or the other, so yes it does make a differense but probably not a lot. I don't really know as I'm usually content with lower quality for faster download speed.
Also, hooking laptop to TV through HDMI would work yes.
