Season 4 of true detective has a huge amount filmed on Iceland but it's supposed to happen in Alaska. Seems like Alaska getting the short end of the stick in a union of states because it just doesn't seem right that it should be cheaper in Iceland.

Yeah. Iceland grows much of their food and uses their extensive manufacturing infrastructure to keep costs down.

Another factor is that the cost of living is extremely low in Iceland. It's one of the lowest in the world due to a lack of unions, labour protections, and generally low wages and an uneducated workforce.

You've forgotten to take into account the fact that Iceland lacks a public healthcare system, so the government has more money available to spend elsewhere, like on growing food in their vast fertile grasslands that cover most of the island.

Or just lots of people qualified for it for some reason another, possibly related to subsidies, but not necessarily.

Kind of like the "30 mile zone" in LA. Even though LA is so expensive, it still often makes sense to film there.

Apparently the website TMZ stands for LA's "thirty mile zone".
