Season 4 of true detective has a huge amount filmed on Iceland but it's supposed to happen in Alaska. Seems like Alaska getting the short end of the stick in a union of states because it just doesn't seem right that it should be cheaper in Iceland.

Another factor is that the cost of living is extremely low in Iceland. It's one of the lowest in the world due to a lack of unions, labour protections, and generally low wages and an uneducated workforce.

You've forgotten to take into account the fact that Iceland lacks a public healthcare system, so the government has more money available to spend elsewhere, like on growing food in their vast fertile grasslands that cover most of the island.
