Also, why do they have wings? Their flight, if they can fly, has to be magical in nature. Something the size of a pony cant fly by flapping wings(gliding I guess would be possible). Wings are unnecessary for flight, so the only assumption one can make is that ponies, as a species, are weak willed in terms of magic use. They need that external focus to channel their magic. Anytime a magic user needs a focus to make use of their powers it gives them a weakness that's easily exploited.

Wands are a focus. Wizards don't need wands. Harry potter universe wizard's strongest spells never made use of wands (harry's mother's protection spell, for instance). A true sorcerer wouldn't have had any issues dealing with hogwarts.

They don't need, they use brooms. They could use anything to make themselves fly that their minds could think of as modes of transport (motorcycle, car, etc). Voldermort could fly unassisted (showing he was very powerful, and had he not relied on a focus, Harry would have died in book 4, if not sooner).

The reason that he relied on a focus, though, was because if he hadn't, his spell would have been wild and uncontrolled. He would have killed all the death eaters present. That's why pegasi have wings, because if they didn't, their magic would cause them to fly in multiple directions at once, killing themselves and turning them into ingredients for a certain earth pony's demonic party.

Yea, that's unlikely. I don't know where you learned magic, but a flight spell is just a levitation spell with a means of thrust. It's more likely the pony would just be able to float upwards unable to propel themselves forwards without a control.
Now, a wand as a focus to control a powerful spell, that makes more sense. The killing curse may have a powerful result (death, and unblockable by conventional means), but it wasn't a difficult spell to learn or master. It's really a basic spell.

So I guess what you're saying is it's like training wheels. In fact, this may be the case, as if you slow it right down, you will notice that Rainbow Dash does not use her wings when she is at top speed, where Fluttershy always uses her wings. Also, Pegasi are not gifted in magic as unicorns are, so that's something too.
