What scenario are you imagining where this will end up in court?
I've had so many bikes stolen, locks cut, wheels removed, that I pretty much started seeing them as one-time use. If I ever found one of the punks that stole one and took it to the police or courts, I'm sure I'd be laughed at and shown the door.
On the off chance I ever found one of my bikes again locked up outside someplace, I figured I'd just slice the tires, remove the seat, or whatever I felt I could get away with without someone seeing.
For all I know, all the thefts I've experienced could've just been people taking their bikes back. Who knows the origin of what ends up at used bike stores.
We all gotta do what we gotta do to make the world a better place though. One sliced tire at a time.

Bike theft is so common here I've seen guys getting on the subway with one wheel. Imagine being so brazen as removing some guys wheel and just taking it, in broad day light on the subway. I suppose maybe not all of them stole it and are just taking home whatever remains of their bike, but I doubt it. All the abandoned, completely gutted bike frames I see lying around on the street... well, the wheels have to be going somewhere.
You've really gotten your wheels removed? That's some crime in the hood stuff. I just always envision some big dude suddenly grabbing my bike, or rather their bike, and not letting go. I just want to have a ready for use excuse.
But yeah it's worth it because since the bike isn't mine, I can bike recklessly and don't worry about theves

Yeah, wheels removed, seat removed. I was most impressed by someone cutting my lock, seeing that on the ground but no bike.
If you ever go to NYC you might notice all the Mexican food delivery cyclists have these huge chains slung on their shoulder when they ride. They're not being paranoid. That shit is needed.

Same reason you'd want a random bike seat? To sell it I guess. Not sure who's buying it, but they keep doing it, so I'd guess someone is.

At least a bike seat is pretty much universal, like how are you going to find someone who needs the specific wheel you stole (besides the owner of the rest of the bike)
