The Oxford word of the year has always been pretty stupid/connected with cringey pop culture of the day. In 2004 it was chav, 2006 bovvered, 2013 selfie (as if taking photos of yourself was something new, requiring a whole new stupid word) and 2019 climate emergency, which is a) 2 words and b) a big nothing burger.

Reminds me of how a few years back they decided to replace the gun emoji with a water gun. Because allowing people to express themselves is a bit too much for the public to handle, apparently.
