i have seen what Beta 1.8 holds and now 1.7.3 just isn't doing it for me anymore.
and my time machine isn't working right now, so i'm stuck living through the next 5 days at normal speed.
D:
The mod api will stop mods from breaking every update.
It's just the source code, but the reason mods break every time is that the code is obfuscated and every update switches the names of classes and stuff.
When you don't have to work around that, your mods will generally continue working without any further work from the developer each update.

It sounds to me like it's only a matter of time before the source code gets leaked to the public.

That has always been true, Minecraft is going open source eventually!
but yeah, i could see someone signing up for the mod developer contract and then leaking the source, but the first devs that are allowed to sign up will be fairly trusted ones.

by the way modders over on the forums plaster copyright over their mods, and everyone over there is all "ZOMG PIRATING EZ WRONG, ZOMG THIS FAGGOT IS ILLEGALLY REDISTRIBUTING THE MINECRAFT.JAR IN HIS MODS, STOP STEALIN FROM NOTCH YOU FAGGOT" this won't happen for quite a while.
don't even get me started on yogscast.

everyone who bought the game will be able to sign up for the source code, after some test phases
