I tried to hype myself up on my resume a little bit and exaggerate my skills while not outright lying. I just want to get my foot in the door somewhere and get back to working.

Just lie. You shouldn't need to give your whole life story to get a job, especially not a low-wage one. So you're well within your moral right to give an unreasonable response to an unreasonable demand.
They're not doing you a favour by hiring you. You're doing them a favour by working for them.
It wasn't that long ago that you could show up to a new city with no connections, no experience, no identity, not even a penny to your name and get a job.
