The alternative approach is to push absolutely every button the moment you get it in a deliberate attempt to break it. If you cannot break it, keep it and be happy in the knowledge you've purchased a quality product. If you can break it, return that shit for something better.
You can't use this method on smartphones though. You'll always freak-out the touchscreen require reboot.
