GREENLAWN, N.Y. (AP) — A baby sitter was found unconscious and lying on top of a 1-month-old boy on a couch, and both died, the police said Friday. The Suffolk County police said they were investigating whether the baby sitter, Teresa Coffey, 39, accidentally asphyxiated the boy, Michael Baldwin III, after passing out on top of him.

“At this point, we have no reason to believe anything other than a tragic accident,” Detective Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky said at a briefing.

The medical examiner is performing autopsies to determine the causes of the deaths of the baby sitter and the boy at a home in Greenlawn, on Long Island. It did not appear that they died of carbon monoxide poisoning, the police said.

The two were discovered unresponsive when the police arrived at the home on Thursday night after a 911 call. They were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The boy was the son of Michael Baldwin II, a freelance television reporter for a local news channel.

Mr. Baldwin told WABC-TV on Friday that he called 911 after finding the baby sitter slumped over his son on the couch.
