Don't care what a blood diamond trustfund manchild thinks.
@previous (B)
And he surely cares what you think.
@previous (B)
I’m literally not fucking upset.
@previous (C)
Looks like I struck a nerve :)
@previous (B)
Whatever dude. Live your own world I don’t fucking care.
@previous (D)
Not if it's accelerating or decelerating fast enough. Or if it's thrown into a black hole.
@previous (B)
Yeah but Elon musk is neither of those things
@1,266,835 (B)
And relatively yea, they can be
@previous (D)
The equivalence principle applies to only inertial (non-accelerating) frames.
The time distortions that occur with acceleration (and similarly, when in a gravitational field) are
real in the sense that all observers will agree the accelerating observer's time proceeds more slowly.
This is quite in contrast with two differing inertial frames, ex. two trains passing each other, where the time dilations are symmetrical between observers and can be transformed away by changing coordinate systems. After all, who's to say which train is actually moving?
Gravity and acceleration, however, cannot be transformed away. That was one of the key insights Einstein had when thinking about how a light ray would or would not bend inside a falling elevator. Well, he wasn't thinking about elevators, but that's the general idea. If light travels always in a straight line, who sees it as going straight if a beam of light is shined from one vertical wall to another? The person in the elevator or the person on the ground? They both can't see it as going straight because the results are inconsistent. Turns out the person on the ground sees it as going straight. And this is something the person in the elevator agrees with. They will see the light appear to bend!
There's a very real asymmetry when it comes to acceleration and gravitation! Einstein initially disliked the idea of calling his theory "general relativity". In some ways, it can be not only confusing to call it that but even misleading.

> Yeah but Elon musk is neither of those things
Correct. He's just a lucky idiot.
@previous (boof)
what have you done lately?
@previous (G)
I did some loafing, what of it
@previous (H)
That's short for Elongated Muskrat.
