Topic: My YouTube channel is not taking off quite like I imagined it would

I have 5 subscribers, my best video got about 120 views with no engagement and a not very good watch time, and my other videos have about 5-10 views each, and I believe over half of those may be my own views.

It is spooky content mixed with NPR-style monotone voice content in which I react to imageboard and reddit threads.

I naturally have a monotone voice, but I've received multiple comments stating that I have a "beautiful voice" and a "voice for radio" while I worked at a call center, so I decided to make my monotonous voice part of my style. The longform content is designed to be fallen asleep to.

Yes, but it doesn't include a lot of the common themes in ASMR such as tapping and whatnot. It's really just "soft-spoken" style content.

10 days isn't long enough for the algorithm to get a grasp on your channel. Youtube isn't like it was a year ago. You need to upload a couple vids a week if they are long form or 5 or more shorts a week and give it 3-4 months. If you don't see progress by then, best change your niche or change the way you are structuring your videos.

This might be part of the problem if it's not properly labeled. If I clicked on a video and it was just some guy reading out Reddit threads in a monotone, I would smash the back button pretty quick.

Id suggest spreading out the upload time but keeping it consistent? I posted a short that randomly got 2.5k views but I don't post regularly at all so there's nothing to keep them coming back

It takes a while for anything good to happen. Youtube did recently make a change so it shows videos with <100 views from small channels so there is a pathway, but there's a lot of channels that read content from other sites because it has functionally no barrier to entry. How do you stand out? Do you have a good video/audio setup? Do you pick especially funny/interesting stories? Why should someone click on your channel vs. 10 other ones that are also small and doing what you do?

In my experience, those videos often differ in purpose than mine. They are focused on the content itself; in some instances, I am focused on the content itself, but it REALLY could be anything. I've read various things, such as threads on 4chan, reddit threads, Facebook comment sections, religious websites, etc. The whole purpose of my channel is to put the viewer into a relaxed state, using any words that I can find as a medium to do that, as well as to point out what I perceive to be a complex collection of chatbot chaos on the Internet. The Dead Internet Theory is a popular conspiracy theory, and my channel plays on that theme.
I specifically market my content as an ASMR genre for surfing the web. I have searched for "surfing the web ASMR" and found a few videos, but they're years old and the creators didn't continue doing them. Now this could indicate that there is not a market for this kind of video, but the videos I've found have over 50k views on them, which I believe indicates that there are people searching for ASMR, websurfing content. Maybe not as much as regular ASMR content, but I believe the market is still there.
Another thing with a lot of those channels seems to be that they are focused on entertaining the viewer. I'm focused on boring the viewer to sleep. I realize that this is inherently going against everything that makes a "good" YouTube channel, but as someone who falls asleep to ASMR almost every night, I understand that there is a need for this type of content.
Another thing that differs with my channel is that those videos often feature a ton of editing, and only really feature the OP of a thread in them. I make it my goal to read every single response in the thread and give my commentary on those responses when I can. Again, the whole idea is to bore the viewer to sleep while also being interesting enough that they can watch it for other purposes as well.
As far as my video/audio setup: the video portion of it is fine. The drawback is my audio, which can range from horrendous to just generally bad. I recognize that this may be the determining factor in whether or not someone watches a video to completion, and this is something that I am working on. I am using a Tascam portable audio recorder, and I don't really know many audio editing tricks, but I'm slowly learning them as I go and I believe that my audio quality has increased considerably in the roughly two weeks that I've been doing this.
I generally pick the threads that I find the most interesting, which typically involve contents like religion, conspiracy theories, politics, paranormal experiences, dating, memes, etc. Sometimes I just scroll through my page's Facebook feed and read every post that I see, offering commentary on those things occasionally. Again, I'm not completely focused on being a "commentary" channel. I am just using the content as a medium to put the viewer in this relaxed state.
As far as standing out, well, given the fact that I can't seem to find content that directly competes with what I'm doing, I would say that it stands out simply for that reason. My shorter videos, which are typically creepypasta that I've either written or found on 4chan, definitely have a lot of competition. The creepypasta market has been long-flooded, so I'm not really looking at THAT from a "blue ocean" perspective but rather a "red ocean" perspective. That is to say, there is a market for them, I just need to carve out my space in that market somehow or another, mainly by bringing original content to the platform.
The real driver is my ~hour long ASMR-style videos. My hope is that simply by promoting it as ASMR, it will get picked up by the autoplay algorithm and viewers will be presented the video as or after they fall asleep.
Get a better microphone or record in a quieter place without all the background noise.
And from what little I skipped through, I didn't hear any mouse clicks or typing. Isn't that half the point?
Another thing is it sounds like you're intentionally lowering your voice and trying to make it sound slightly deeper than it is. Not by a lot but a little. That doesn't add to the experience. It detracts from it.
What are you going to spread the channel? Clearly not a lot since you wouldn't post it here even though you're completely anonymous both here and there. I'd say 5 subscribers is all you deserve. And you're right. The youtube algorithm figured that out appropriately by not recommending it to almost anyone.

Yes, the audio quality is bad. I’ve purchased a new microphone and should get it by the beginning of next week. I also tried to incorporate tapping into this video, but the mic didn’t pick it up. I’m going to keep practicing the tapping and get it down and other techniques, but I have seen ASMR videos not include the tapping and whatnot.
@1,266,677 (I)
I do plan on doing a reading of Minichan soon. I was originally going to do TC because I don’t post on TC so I’m a little bit more impartial, but now that the cat is out of the bag we will go with Minichan instead.
@1,266,680 (Kook !!rcSrAtaAC)
I have to mute the curse words per the YouTube content guidelines. I hate it, but it is what it is. I plan to have an uncensored version available on other platforms at some point.
@1,266,685 (Kook !!rcSrAtaAC)
My normal voice is very similar to this, but I do try to tone up the monotony a bit. I don’t know much about vocal fry.
@1,266,688 (Kook !!rcSrAtaAC)
What did I say that makes me sound like an incel? Since when does being a man who disagrees with clear misandry make one an incel? I am not an incel; I have had a small amount of sexual partners and could have more if I wanted to, but I don’t just fuck anyone that throws themselves at me.
YouTube pushes literal right-wing propaganda to people all the time. I know there’s a corporate agenda to demonize men, but I still believe the content can be pushed to people.

The whole concept is based around the idea of not exactly knowing what I’m reading, which is why I state that my narration is not an endorsement. The channel is based around the Dead Internet theory, which states that the Internet has been overrun by bots, and my goal is to showcase this bot activity. The surprise is part of the fun for me.
But maybe we disagree on what constitutes relaxing. Again, I admit that my audio quality is shit and it’s something I’m working on. But I find my videos very relaxing and honestly they make me laugh sometimes, so I think it fits the theme.

1. Again, “practicing” the content goes against the entire point. It’s supposed to be a surprise and “anything goes”.
About the mispronunciation of words: I’ve noticed this and in the latest video I edited I’ve started to cut around the mispronunciations and make it flow better. It’s just one of those things that you don’t realize until you rewatch the final product, and I’m being more mindful of it now.
The tangents truly don’t matter. The point of the content, again, isn’t the content within the video. It’s just for me to talk until you get tired and fall asleep.
2. When did I use the videos as therapy?
@1,266,712 (Kook !!rcSrAtaAC)
Have you considered that women are not my primary audience? I’m TARGETING imageboard browsing, conspiracy theorist, right-wing sympathetic men, not redditor women.
If you can’t see that there’s a clear gender war happening on the Internet then you’re not paying attention because that gender war benefits you. Furthermore, there are very clearly bad actors working behind the scenes to further a divide on the Internet and as a result of that, real life. It’s so obvious that it feels disingenuous when you tell me otherwise.

The thing with you, kookerpie, is that you too demonize every man who has an opinion that doesn’t quite fit into the radical feminist agenda. You are quite literally the very type of entity that I want to showcase in my videos. Also, the World War point was pretty spot on in my opinion. Russia-Ukraine and now Hamas-Israel are all heating up, and the US has direct ties with both of them. If China flips the switch, it’s on. It would be ignorant to ignore these conflicts and their ramifications. Furthermore, my goal with asking that question was the ask whether or not the wars were explicitly reported as such in the early days of the conflicts. Again, I even admitted my ignorance and said that I’m not a history buff, but I wouldn’t think that the initial actions occurred and the newspaper headlines read “World War” on day one. That was the intention.

Two, the chatbot thing is almost a certainty at this point. It’s been known for quite some time. Do you remember the 4chan-GPT experiment? Do you believe that that experiment cannot be replicated by massive world governments with even more capabilities? China does own a sizable portion of reddit.
Anonymous E replied with this 2 years ago, 5 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^][v]#1,266,761
OK I listened to a few of your videos. I'm giving you my honest opinion.
You need to get better quality in your audio recordings. To much air swirling around. With headphones it is even worse. You can make a sound baffle out of some cheap foam and a coat hanger. But do something to stop that. It's annoying. This has nothing to do with your speaking voice. That is just fine.
Check to see how long your audience is sticking with your videos. Click on the analytics to one of your videos, scroll down and look at your average view duration. On any video over say 10 minutes if your view duration is under 40% you have work to do. People are losing interest to quickly.
Keep this in mind. Youtube algorithm will push any video as long as it is within their guidelines. They will not push out videos that doesn't hold the audiences attention long enough. Reason for this is...they don't make any money. Youtube does this to make money period. If your videos don't there are hundreds of thousands others they will put in front of yours. If you do not show them you can hold an audience they won't push your impressions out in the search. It is as simple as that.
Start off trying to get better audio quality. I have heard some decent voice overs done with nothing but a cell phone with some blankets hung up to absorb the sound. The style of videos you are doing your audio is everything!!

No problem. I understand what it is like starting out. I've been a youtuber since 2008.
Good deal on the mic. I don't know what fits into your budget but google "homemade sound panels"
The mic is good but you have to learn how to deaden that sound out. Just do some research on it.
I took a closet in my house years back and made a sound booth out of it. But you don't need a booth..you can do it with a few pieces of well placed foam around your mic.

This is honestly a very bad and dumb take. It's almost as bad as the mental health breakdown kook had earlier ITT.
If OP did something that wasn't niche or obscure, then everyone would say: why would anyone watch this when there are already so many other channels that do the same?
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
You don't have to be a history professor to see that many of the biggest names, companies, and personalities were some of the first if not the first to start doing something that was super niche and obscure.
Recording yourself playing a video game used to be this super obscure thing some people did and almost no one cared about. Now (for reasons that are still completely mysterious and nonsensical to me), this is an incredibly common genre and some of the guys that started early doing it have made out extremely well for themselves.

That's the closest I've watched that I'd consider asmr. Her voice is subtly chilling and adds to the experience. Whether or not she talks that way in real life, I don't know. But even if she doesn't, it still doesn't seem forced, like I feel like your voice is (again, just by a little).
Maybe you can eventually develop a style of your own. Subtleness, and some feeling of naturalness / effortlessness is key, even if that naturalness is some sense of unnaturalness as I feel atrocity guide gives, if you know what I mean.

I also took your initial advice. It wasn’t until you decided to use an insult to label me and then pushed your tribalistic nature onto me that I “took it exceptionally poorly.” If your version of criticism is that of insults, then it’s no wonder you’re such an unhappy person in your everyday life.

I have a lot of interests beyond “incel topics” and if you paid attention you would understand that not all of my opinions fall in line with your view of a stereotypical incel.
Furthermore, if you cannot see the blatant tribalism in American politics then what are you seeing? It’s not a secret. I said it because the content I was reading, in my opinion, showed examples of it.
Lastly, I took Anon I’s points all very seriously. Maybe because they didn’t let political bias overshadow their critiques.
