I was thinking about installing security film on the windows in my car. Basically the film is supposed to hold the glass together and make it more difficult to smash through. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdMNEVqls8c That's all well and good, but in reality I am more likely going to have another crash instead of being robbed, and I'm concerned about how this security film would act. When I've crashed before, all the windows (apart from the windscreen and rear window) shattered really easy into little pieces and there was glass fucking everywhere. Security film is supposed to hold the glass together, so the glass wouldn't go anywhere and it would be marginally safer. But what about if you were to drive into a lake, some mud or some other nasty shit? You would need to break a window to get out. Security film companies say that their film is only designed to block attack from the outside and that you would still be able to kick the glass out easily, stopping you from drowning or whatever. Is this reality or just marketing? Would you still be able to exit the car by smashing windows from the inside? I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Yeah, just don't be a shit driver. If you were actually worried about anything regarding a car crash you would be more careful.

Yeah. I haven't been driving for very long (4 years) but I'd say I'm a decent driver. I've had one crash, now I don't do hallucinogenics when driving or act like a boy racer too much, I'm much safer. All my passengers say I'm a good driver.

The chances of something like that happening are very low, but I still don't wanna do anything that will make it harder for me if I crash. Know what I mean? A friend of my mother died recently after coming off road and getting stuck in mud, she couldn't open the doors and was about my age.

Well, typically the electrics are gonna cease to function after a head on collision or submerging the whole car in water (all my windows are electric), you really need to be able to smash the windows.

I see. You're going to have to take your pick, though. If you're more likely to crash into a building than drive into a lake, go for the security film. If vice versa, don't go for the film.

Well, like I said, the companies that sell this claim that you can just kick the glass out from the inside and it isn't a problem. I'm not easily convinced which is why I'm asking about how easy it is to break that shit (from the inside).

Its only meant to protect your car from getting broken into really. The glass breaks in car crashes most often because of the frame crushing it, not because its hit from the outside. Save your money.

Right. The film is supposed to hold the glass in place even if the frame bends it, it will come out as one or two big pieces and not shatter into tiny shards. I am often leaving my car in not so great areas and sleeping in it. I would feel happier doing this if the film was on there.
