For instance, did you know that they used to tell you to pinch your nose and hold your head backward when you have a nosebleed? Because it's so nice to bleed down your fucking throat.
> - Wearing cloth masks prevents the spread of viruses. > - mRNA vaccines are safe and effective.
You misunderstand. Forever we used to think that the masks are of dubious value to protect you against getting infected, but we actually modified our understanding to know that they can be effective at least to some extent in lessening the probability of infection, though by how much is pretty uncertain and it seems some virus variants are better at defeating the measure than others. Surely you remember the early advice that people shouldn't bother with the masks, because we had no evidence that they would be useful? Then statistics came in to suggest some value after all. So, you got it backwards. What was never in doubt was that there is some value for infected people to wear masks, and since a great many people can be infected with no obvious symptoms, it makes some sense to wear the fuckin thing. Surgeons are still wearing masks when they operate on your liver.
As to the mRNA vaccines, those haven't been around for decades, smartass.
> Forever we used to think that the masks are of dubious value to protect you against getting infected
Yes, and all that good knowledge was chucked out and replaced with idiocy when covid came along. Fuck knows why. It became "common medical advice" throughout 2020/2021. And now we've come full circle to knowing that it's shit again.
> but we actually modified our understanding to know that they can be effective at least to some extent in lessening the probability of infection
Actually, we didn't. There have been multiple studies done proving that it's as effective as trying to keep mosquitoes out by using a wire fence.
> though by how much is pretty uncertain
It is now very certain knowledge.
> and it seems some virus variants are better at defeating the measure than others.
Nah.
> Surely you remember the early advice that people shouldn't bother with the masks
I do.
> because we had no evidence that they would be useful?
We actually did. The sensible, rational, reasonable (albeit faggotty) voices got shouted down by the loud, angry, ignorant ones.
> Then statistics came in to suggest some value after all.
Around about the same time Neil Ferguson's shitty model came out.
> So, you got it backwards.
I didn't. You're just leaving out parts of the story.
> What was never in doubt was that there is some value for infected people to wear masks
No there isn't. That's also shit.
> and since a great many people can be infected with no obvious symptoms, it makes some sense to wear the fuckin thing.
No it doesn't.
> Surgeons are still wearing masks when they operate on your liver.
I said cloth masks, I didn't say medical grade / surgical masks.
> As to the mRNA vaccines, those haven't been around for decades, smartass.
You said "recently (last few decades)" - last time I checked the last few decades includes the last few years. If you meant the "last few decades excluding 2020 to 2022", then you should have said so.

@previous (Father Dave !RsSxeehGwc) > I absolutely broke you on TC :)
Seriously doubt that. I don't ever remember talking to you about any of this stuff, let alone on TC.

Those are both true. If you have evidence to the contrary, please post the links to those verifiable, reliable, scientific studies. Thank you.

Then you are being a pest? That's not kind. > the rest of your shit
No, that's not accurate. > I said cloth masks, I didn't say medical grade / surgical masks.
nice dodge, jackass

The guy with the cigarettes is Arthur Godfrey, who was big in radio show business. Here's a song of his, She's Too Fat for Me Polka. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wypWaIq39r0

Sorry you feel that way - it was not my intention. I am not the one who got all argumentative though, and I'm allowed to defend myself, so unkind pest yourself.
> > I said cloth masks, I didn't say medical grade / surgical masks. > nice dodge, jackass
Hey, I'm not dodging or back-pedaling here. I very deliberately specified cloth masks in my original reply because I know very well these arguments (which you rudely dismiss as shit... maybe the world needs a couple more years) do not apply to medical grade masks.

and yet you got the topic of the thread backwards. the advice used to be that even the surgical masking, let alone mere cloth, would be practically useless in the population at large. that was the older, long standing idea. now the advice is different -- it can be better than nothing, but now that there isn't a worldwide shortage of N95 rated stuff, it is kind of moot anyway.
