I know the feeling after being involved in unfortunate accident through no fault of my own. I would suggest a type of car that doesn't compromise on build quality (BMW/Audi/VW etc), the reliability and solidness (especially if you're prone to crashing) is unmatched. Avoid shit piles that have the structural integrity of a tin can (Fiat/Citroen/SEAT etc).

Those cars are the worse to get into a serious wreck with. Because their expensive and the frame is heavy, the insurance companies will almost never total that shit. And bottom line, you don't want to be saddled with a car that's been seriously fucked up in an accident.

What you really want is lightweight car with a 5 star safety rating. Something that's guaranteed to be totaled in good collision while still giving you a reasonable chance of walking away unharmed. Honda, Subaru and Hyundai would be my picks.
