I was reading a lefty forum and this was their rundown of the Ukraine Russia conflict. Do you agree?
“Here is a brief primer on the eight years leading up the start of the Ukraine war
Ukraine is a widely acknowledged incredibly corrupt country that experienced a coup in 2014 where the democratically elected president supported by eastern Ukraine was violently overthrown by far right fascists, almost certainly with western help, to the general cheers of western Ukrainians. In the aftermath Crimea and the Donbas oblasts seceded and Russia intervened to stop a civil war and protect its Crimean interests. We would later find out that the cease fire agreement was explicitly a stalling tactic so the west could arm Ukraine to continue the war at a later date, while Russia considered the matter closed and mostly did fuck all for the republics. Ukraine nursed its wounds by passing laws explicitly targeting its Russian ethnic minority (and also Yiddish speakers for some reason). The 2019 elections were a blistering rebuke of the 2014 coup, with Zelensky, who ran on a platform opposing the corruption of the post 2014 government and favoring reconciliation with Russia, winning 73-24 in an absolute landslide. At the start of his term Zelensky tried to rein in fascist paramilitaries that had been skirmishing with the Donbas republics for years and they basically told him to fuck off, and in response he fucked off. His presidency was generally marred by scandal and corruption (Zelensky was in the Pandora Papers) and his popularity plummeted. However Zelensky found a lifeline in drumming up militancy towards Russia, which had mostly fucked off and left the Donbas out to dry for the last eight years. Russia built up forces on the border as the rhetoric kept building until they eventually launched a half ass strike on Kiev. Ukraine almost went to the negotiating table with Russia to hash out differences when I shit you not Boris Johnson arrived and made some nebulous promises of undying support. Ukraine then assassinated one of its own head negotiators and dug in its heels and here we are.
The short simple answer from all of that is Ukraine is being used in a proxy conflict with Russia that the west is content to fight to the last Ukrainian, and also Ukraine bad.
