Topic: a neat thing about the teletype machines, in use most of the twentieth century

There was a bell in the machine that you could code as a non-printing character. Newsrooms would receive stories with a number of bells preceding to indicate important news! They started with 5-bit coding, then later came the 8-bit. These were akin to the computer ASCII character codes still used today. For instance, a plain text file can contain a variety of non-printing characters.

for instance, the end-of-line character and carriage-return character are present. The carriage is the physical body of the moving typing set.
