Jesus CHRIST, President Biden sure is taking a tough line here. I was afraid he'd simply use this situation for opportunistic gestures, but no, he's daring Hamas to strike a US aircraft carrier! I notice the embattled UK government is also sending war ships to Israel (thank heaven they're not sending them to the Black Sea to help Ukraine, against a country that can actually totally fuck them). I have never been more impressed by how tough these world leaders are and I hope they all get reelected next year.

Dave, this stuff seriously seems like it's been getting to your mental health. Take a break. Be with your wife and child.
A carrier is a ship that carries planes and has a runway for them. They provide mobile air supremacy and assistance.
A destroyer is a smaller fast ship that acts as an escort, it's quick and nimble but historically weaker than the others (modern destroyers tend to have frigate-tier weapons).
A frigate is a general fighting boat, with a good balance between fighting capability and speed.
A cruiser is a big fighting boat, strong but slow.
A submarine is a special boat that floats underwater, they primarily have stealth value and can do good damage by infiltrating enemy lines.
In TF2, the roles would be Carrier= Sniper, Destroyer = Scout, Frigate = Soldier, Cruiser = Heavy and Submarine = Spy.

I've checked again and apparently the confusion is due to how the USA classifies ships versus how other nations do. In many other nations, cruiser boats are the largest ones and close to capital ships. However, after a 1975 reclassification, USA Navy defines the cruiser-frigate relationship as defined above.

"The names for the naval ships, basically referred to the size and capabilities of a warship, with Frigate being the smallest and least well armed to the Cruiser being the heaviest and best armed (beside the historical battleships and pocket battle ships (a kind of extremely well armed crusier) of course)."

Cool, glad to hear that. I always love being right, even in a situation like this where I just chose two random ships and claimed they were swapped. But now we both know an obscure fact or two we wouldn't have otherwise. So I guess we all win.
