How does somebody end up like this? He is nearly 50, and all he has to show for it is a failed marriage and a string of failed careers. Is it some single personality flaw, or many small failures that mounted up?

Pardon? You are very mistaken. I'm not named Matt. My name is truly Throckmorton. It's a strange, old family name. I've looked up the etymology and it is this: "habitational name from Throckmorton in Worcestershire, which is named with Old English throc 'beam bridge' + mere 'pool' + tūn 'enclosure, settlement." My great-grandfather had the same name. I know it's odd, and it was a bit embarrassing in school, but now I'm proud of it because of the family lineage.
