Anonymous A started this discussion 2 years ago#113,701
1. GTA SA
2. Civilization 4 (with mods)
3. Skyrim
4. GTA IV
5. Red Dead Redemption 2
6. SimCity 2000/3/4
7. The Sims 1/2
8. Freddy Trims a Tree
9. Utmeskiten
List is heavily skewed due to me playing very few games in the past ~10 years

Because it's boring as shit. A game doesn't have to have a story, but if it doesn't, a story better emerge from the gameplay (the Civilization series is the perfect example of this happening; I'd say that's the preferred way a game should be, even). Halo doesn't have any of that.

Halo does have a story. I'm not saying you have to like it or find it interesting, but saying it doesn't even have a story is factually incorrect. As early as Halo 1, there's multiple factions involved with their own goals, and the lore only gets fleshed out more as it goes on.

Does 1958 count as part of "the century"? It was less than 100 years ago. If so, Tennis for Two should get a mention for being, arguably, the first video game.

For RPGs, Baldur's Gate 3 needs a mention. It's a masterpiece, it's very rare that something of that calibre is made, IMO.

Heck yes, I'd say 2 had my favourite story as well. The Covenant civil war was cool as hell. I love that Master Chief level where you're fighting through High Charity, at first it all seems normal, but then you start seeing signs of infighting, and eventually the Covenant splits along race lines and they're fighting each other as well as you.

Was waiting for this to appear. I really wanted to enjoy this game, but I can't muster up enough Autism to. I'm just not willing to read a wiki and do a PhD's worth of research to play a game. I suspect some of the appeal is that the interface is so poorly designed so people feel accomplished in simply learning to play the game. Which is fine, it's just if if I'm going to put effort like that into something, I'd rather learn something actually useful.

A) it's on steam now
B) if you don't want to intervene in events you don't even have to do anything, go watch some dwarfs
C) why are you so bad at being autistic?

Honestly, mostly because of the improved gun fight mechanics, and graphics from the previous GTAs. Maybe the previous GTA Liberty City one between GTA SA and 4 had the same, idk. I barely touched that one and don't remember. So maybe that would've taken GTA 4's place on my list if I had played it more.
But, yeah, the story and character development just weren't that amazing in GTA 4, not anything like how GTA SA was. I didn't actually like the whole mechanic of switching between characters. I felt like that compromised on character development and I identified less with the characters. Just playing one character only, like CJ, I think helps with the immersion.

There's not a lot of activities other than main story missions. San Andreas had pimping, taxi driver, racing etc. A lot of the locations in 4 look the same, San Andreas, Vice City and 5 were a lot more varied and the cars controlled horribly. A lot was removed from previous GTAs. The story was one of the best in GTA though and the missions were great. It was a good game but not the best GTA.

Oh, fuck, I got my numbers wrong. What you're referring to as GTA 5, I've been referring to as, GTA 4, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GTA IV. GTA 4 not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning video game made useful by the vital system components comprising a full gaming system as defined by Rockstar Ltd.
GTA 4 is the one in Liberty City that I said I hadn't played much of. I didn't know that was the same game.
I didn't actually do much of the side stuff in GTA SA, but now that I think about it, I did miss some of it in GTA 5. Like the dating or home invasions or turf wars lol.
From what little I read, they're going to do something with multiple protagonists again like they did in GTA 5 in the next GTA. I'm really not looking forward to that for reasons I described above.
