To devil's advoce this; my English curriculum was an ersaz and up-grade-imagined/fictionalized version of added on, if you like, GCE (made up birthday card neologism English) lessons, not really to any government specification or literarily traditional standard. The fact we had a lecturer from GCSE country is WHY my Scots' S-Grade looks so over-formal. It is also, for this matter, pittifully under-rewarded considering, although on a curve of slightly more pretentious writers.
