Topic: My plant blog. Season 1

Anonymous A started this discussion 1 year ago #113,443

I'm creating a plant blog where I'll update the progress of my plants.

First plant is my weed plant.

It was laying dormant for ages and has now started to grow

My tiger plant is getting a new leaf and my fern is doing great after it cut off all the dying leafs

Did you grow the tiger plant from seed?

What type of fern is that?

What type of lighting setup do you use?

I bought some adjustable cool/warm LED strip lights to attach to a wood enclosure I made. I cut the LED strip into pieces, so that I could lay the strip flat, zig-zagging across the wood enclosure. Except my plan to re-solder the strip together with wires has failed because I didn't know how difficult it is to solder when the pads are so close together.

I wish I could just buy a pre-built solution and not mess with LED strip lights. But I've been unable to find any ~10,000 lumen light setups with adjustable cool/warm temperatures and brightness intensity.

You can get clips from AliExpress to connect led strip without soldering

Thanks. I spent like an hour or more on amazon a week or so back and bought some. They still haven't arrived so I'm not sure if they'll work. The pad spacing on my LED strip is a little unusual. And of course none of the amazon listings I saw specify any relevant measurements about the terminal spacing. So it'll be pure luck if they work out.

I'll try AliExpress next. I'd imagine it's probably better for this type of thing. Hopefully the shipping times won't be a month or more. The time it takes me to get stuff from amazon is already killing me.

Tiger plant was purchased when it was young.

The fern is from a supermarket.

AliExpress guarantee i think 10 day shipping on orders over €10 or something, it's usually quicker where I am. Also you could look for aquarium lights but they don't often have adjustable colour temp.
Is artificial lighting for houseplants neccessary? I've never bothered with it and my plants seem to do fine mostly

It's takes a special individual to fuck light up.

Probably not necessary. But last year, I grew some monsteras from seed in front of a small window in a dimly lit room. They sprouted and came up in winter/spring. Then a month ago I moved them to a different location with a little more light (not even outside or anything) and the amount they grew in the three or so weeks was nearly unbelievable to me.

Now I have to move them back to their old dimly lit location so I wanted to get them some lights because I don't want the nice large leaves that grew to wither.

Another reason for getting the LED strips was I wanted to see if I can use them for general lighting. I have a large room with minimal in-ceiling-overhead lighting and not enough windows. I can only do so much with lamps around the perimeter of the room; I'd like to string up LEDs along and across the ceiling.

If you aren't using strip LEDs for plants, are you using them for general lighting?

If you like cactus you outta consider adding a peruvian torch to your collection. I grew one from seeds... for ornamental purposes... a few years back and it's one of the easiest plants I've ever grown. It grew to be about half a meter in maybe 2 years. They can grow flowers too, although mine didn't.

The clips came in to re-connect the LED strips. It was a huge headache using them because they didn't fit properly and I had to manually bend every single metal contact so that it'd actually make a connection with the strip. On top of that, the wires that I have weren't thick enough and the clips didn't always puncture through and make contact with the copper core. Even with a multimeter it took a ton of time troubleshooting where the connection problems were.

The whole setup is very make-shift, but I'm happy enough with the result. It's worth it having the warm/cool adjustments + brightness settings all the way up to supposedly ~10k lumens. The other neat thing about this is that because I have access to the power and control terminals, I could hook this thing up to a microcontroller and control the whole thing on a programmable schedule. I'm not sure if I'll bother though because I like the power controller I got on amazon. It even has a remote control.

My monstera is sprouting its first fenestrated leaf! I've read they don't tend to do that if they don't get enough light, so it's an overall good sign, however, it's probably from before I put it under its new LED light setup.

I bought a light sensor so I can be a little more quantitative in how much light my setup produces. I think it'll arrive in like a week. My setup seems to produce a lot of light, but it's hard to say objectively because the rest of the room is so dark.
