Best knife for self-defense?
Thinking about a switchblade or something like it, but I'm not sure what all the options are, so I'm open to other suggestions.
I'm looking to carry it in a backpack, or messenger bag (saddlebags are for kids). I don't want something too elaborate or heavy, and I'm looking for something a little more easy to open than a multi-tool. I also am not sure that I want anything with a sheath because I feel like it could unsheath itself in my bag.

You can run from danger or danger can run from you. If there's the option of the latter, it'd be senseless not to take it.

In many situations, I probably would. But it's always better to have options.
> No one wins in a knife fight
And in many situations, simply showing it can be enough to diffuse the situation. Almost all muggers and rapists are opportunists and few are willing to die over a situation that they thought would be easy and straightforward. Everything is context dependent though and there's nothing that will replace using your head, including defaulting to running without thinking.
Anyway, let's re-focus this on suggestions for knives. Happy to have this discussion elsewhere in another thread if you want.

knives aren't good for defense. also if it's in your bag it's already out of reach in a pinch, which should be the only time you are pulling a knife on someone. at that point anything hard or sharp is probably good enough or it's too late

usually if you're using your head you're not going to pull a knife out to 'deter' somebody. as soon as you pull out a deadly weapon you change the situation and it's not going to end well. if you pull a knife on someone you better be prepared to stab them or be stabbed or worse. this is not something you want to plan for you're being dumb

yeah 'look I have a knife' everybody has a knife or a gun you dumbass. that's not going to deter someone who is menacing you enough that you fear for your life

Wrong. There are a lot of situations where you can see trouble several seconds a way, which is more than enough time to pull a knife. Yeah, it's not going to help if someone comes up behind you and puts a knife to your neck or a gun to your back. But no one's talking about that.
@1,255,302 (dj coco nutty) > as soon as you pull out a deadly weapon you change the situation and it's not going to end well.
Of course. Everyone knows that. That's the point. Very few want to die over a random confrontation and most will run at the sight of anything resembling a weapon. Obviously, some won't, but with people like that there's no telling what they'll do anyway, so there's not much to lose. That's the reason why you never allow yourself to be relocated or kidnapped in any form. Sure, you may die trying to escape, but that still sounds like a better outcome than being tortured and who knows what else at the agressor's discretion.
> if you pull a knife on someone you better be prepared to stab them or be stabbed or worse.
Obviously. No different than the rule that the only people you should ever point a gun at are those you intend to kill.
> this is not something you want to plan for you're being dumb
No. You are.
> yeah 'look I have a knife' everybody has a knife or a gun you dumbass.
And most that do expect everyone else to be unarmed. There are many many instances, you can read on the news, watch videos of, or read anywhere, where a would-be mugger/rapist/robber runs at the sight of a weapon.
> that's not going to deter someone who is menacing you enough that you fear for your life
Retarded.

Go look at a video of it being used on a slab of pork. Also, the blade was specifically designed because of a contract Spyderco had with the DEA for their undercover agents.
With all due respect, it sounds like you don't know shit about knives, so I'm not sure why you keep harassing me and spamming my threads with all this shit. Dunning? Meet Kruger.

I was wrong. It may've not been the DEA; they don't specify which law enforcement agency it was. It sounds like it was for informants or similar because they mention it was designed for people who don't have extensive combat training.

Just pulled the trigger on a Spyderco Stretch 2 XL Signature Lightweight folding kinfe! This thing is just 77 grams, despite having a 100mm (3.92") blade!
I got it with a partially serrated edge and plan on using this also for everyday use. Can't wait for it to come in.

I have a headlamp. And a few normal smaller flashlights.
If I recall, I also have one manually powered battery-less flashlight that came with my car which I keep in the trunk, but I think at some point I ought to get another. Some of these flashlights I use infrequently enough that I don't want to have to worry about if the battery is still good.

My Spyderco Stretch 2 XL Signature Lightweight folding knife arrived today! It's great. It's so lightweight; I actually have a steak knife that weighs 2-3 grams more. But this is no steak knife haha.
I'm surprised how ergonomic it is. They balanced the center of mass perfectly and the grip pattern is such that your hand is guided back to the center if your grip ever slips. Even the belt clip is designed to fit into your hand. I thought about removing the clip before the knife arrived, but I think I'll keep it on since the placement aids my grip.
I'm going to buy a steak just to get more of an excuse to use the knife.
It's really the perfect knife for defense and doubles as a great utility knife for EDC. You'll barely even know it's in your pocket or bag with how light it is.
