Alright, time for another famous philosophical paradox. This one comes from ancient Greece and is known as Zeno's paradox of the Arrow. I'll lay this one out in its barebones logical structure.
1.) An arrow is in motion only if it is changing its position
2.) An arrow cannot change its poition in a single moment
3.) So an arrow is not in motion in a single moment
4.) If an arrow is motionless at a single moment, then the arrow never moves.*
5.) So the arrow never moves
6.) What goes for the arrow goes for everything else
7.) So nothing moves
*Premise 4 seems strange upon first reading it, so hopefully I can clarify. If time is divisible into an infinite number of moments, then it will take an infinite amount of time for an arrow to travel between any 2 moments in time. If time is divisible into a finite number of moments, and it is motionless for each one of those finite moments, then motion is impossible.
In case you may be confused about the part regarding the finite divisibility of time, consider the following. Let's say that a second can be divided into 4 parts, but no smaller. The smallest measurable amount of time is .25 seconds. At t=1 second, the arrow is motionless (from Premise 2). At t= 1.25 seconds, the arrow is motionless. At t= 1.5 seconds, the arrow is motionless. At t=1.75 seconds, the arrow is motionless. At t= 2 seconds, the arrow is motionless. Thus, the arrow never moves if time has a finite number of discrete divisible parts.
What do you think, Minichan? Is Zeno right and all motion is an illusion? Or did he make a reasoning error, and if so, where did he make a mistake?
