Topic: Book recommendations for someone very not well read at all

Anonymous A started this discussion 2 years ago #113,163

So English isn't my first language but I can read and write well. I think haha

Anyone have recommendations for classics or "must reads"?

I want to feel like I've read the books the average English native has read. I'm talking classics you're forced to read in the school and the popular books. Maybe books that make you a well rounded reader.

I mean it when I say this : I have read about two English books. Of mice and men, and the first Harry Potter book.

If you had to produce a list of maybe 5 or 10 books, what would they be? Please nothing obscure or very inaccessible, but also nothing child-like.

I didn't know how exactly to word this request but I hope it makes sense.

Maybe if you could rewind time and read 5 or 10 books, what would they be? I just want recommendations generally I guess

I hated much of what I was made to read in secondary school. I'm not sure that's what you're after. I'd rather spoon out my eyes than read Atlas Shrugged again.

Homage to Catalonia and We are also good reads that are pretty friendly.

I think Animal Farm is a fairly universal experience.

I do actually have this but it is a bit hard at times. I look up a lot of the wording before I understand. Or, I cross reference with other language copies I have to understand the English..

Perhaps the most important and compelling nonfiction I have read is Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World. Cocksucking fundamentalist maniacs are just another stripe of fascist and they are very busy in the world.

like, they weren't child like but were plainly written and entertaining. i remember enjoying 'dry' and 'me talk pretty one day'
the latter had something to do with the author learning another language and struggling even
