Topic: In which someone attempts to argue that piracy is as bad as commercial plagiarism

[email protected] : Yes... It's best to, some OS's loose stability when left on too long, Vista being one of them. <.<
FISSILE DRAGON: Ahh~.
FISSILE DRAGON: Why are you using Vista as opposed to 7?
[email protected] : 7 sucks.
[email protected] : I'd be on XP if I could find a legal isntallation disc.
[email protected] : Maybe even 2,000.
FISSILE DRAGON: Why are you worried about it being legal? -No one- has ever been prosecuted or sued for having an unlicenced copy.
[email protected] : ...
[email protected] : You're talking to someone who's been pirated *from* before.
[email protected] : Don't, start this, with me.
FISSILE DRAGON: When'd that happen? And how?
[email protected] : I'll explain after I reboot. Brb.
FISSILE DRAGON: Okay.
[email protected] : Kay, so, I make music. Not crappy music either, it's good. Been making it since I was twelve.
[email protected] : Made a new album every year so far, I'm at six now, I release them on Christmas Eve. I do all the cover work, I make the images on the discs themselves, I make the sounds, I do everything myself. All my own work.
[email protected] : That way I don't need to worry about someone else going "Oh hey I made that you're lying I'M SUING YOU."
[email protected] : Plus I just don't work well in teams.
[email protected] : Anyway, I typically give some of my tracks away online for free.
[email protected] : I normally never have an issue with this.
[email protected] : Well, one guy pretended to be a huge fan of my music. I mean, freaking huge.
[email protected] : So, he somehow convinced me to send him an entire album.
[email protected] : He then sold the music and made almlst $200,000 off of it.
[email protected] : *almost
[email protected] : We're about that far in debt, dad's an idiot.
[email protected] : I could really use that.
[email protected] : I was fourteen, maybe fifteen, at the time.
[email protected] : Coudln't do crap about it.
[email protected] : Besides all that, I'm trying to become a penetration tester. I can't even have petty theft on my criminal record. Pirated software would kill my chances of getting in.
FISSILE DRAGON: Um.
FISSILE DRAGON: That's not the same as unsolicited downloading at all.
[email protected] : Plagerism, pirating. Close enough.
FISSILE DRAGON: Using software without a licence isn't the same as plagiarism :V.
[email protected] : I don't like talking about this with pirates because they're so heartless.
[email protected] : So shut up.
FISSILE DRAGON: wat
I don't think you get what I'm saying.
Merely using something for personal use without permission isn't nearly as bad as illegally distributing it for profit without claiming credit, and in turn, that isn't nearly as bad as claiming credit for it and then selling it.

On the one hand, that guy was a cunt, and you should've ratted his ass out to the police; on the other hand, downloading Photoshop for personal use because it's too fucking expensive isn't some kind of massive crime against humanity.
[email protected] : Not reading that.
[email protected] : There's no valid excuse to pirate. Ever.
FISSILE DRAGON: >Not reading that
[email protected] : Kay, guess we got nothing to talk about then.
[email protected] signed off at 12.34.
FISSILE DRAGON: Blocked me? 10/10, bud.

Opinion C: both suck and rip off the creators, who poured a ton of time and energy into the creation process. Both piracy and plagiarism are done by self-serving cunts, who don't give a damn about the fiscal situation of someone who wants to be able to do something covered by IP rights as a career without having to worry about someone else --stealing-- copying it.

Does there really need to be an argument regarding which is "worse"?

I just want to point out some things:
Those who pirate music are ten times more likely to buy music as opposed to those who don't,
that despite piracy CD sales are up,
and that a non-MPAA/RIAA/industry-affiliated study found piracy doesn't harm CD sales.

Not forgetting other things like the study that concluded piracy boosts anime sales in Japan.

I kind of agree with you, but I don't think the issue is so black and white.

When I pirate something (a music track, for example) I don't think I'm on par with a commercial plagiariser. I wouldn't have otherwise gone out and bought it, so my solitary download doesn't equate to a lost sale for the artist. But if I do like it, I'm likely to go out and spend money on it - then recommend it to friends if I think it's good; what's wrong with that?

I am aware of this, and I'm not necessarily "against" it. I'm referring to the pirates who believe that they shouldn't need to pay for anything. If you actually go out and buy every single thing you pirated and enjoyed*, I'm not going to take any issue with you.

*In the timespan directly following the point you enjoyed it. It doesn't count if you're one of the people who, for example, pirates a game on release day and then says "see? piracy helps sales!" when you buy it on a Steam sale, six months later, for 75% off.

If I was never going to buy products in the first place, how can a company lose money? I am seriously fucking cheap. Buy nothing. Ever. I haven't bought music since the 90's, and I've never once bought digital media. Not because I haven't wanted things, more because I'm just that cheap. Pirating something when you have the money, and would spend the money if you had to is a bit different. I wouldn't spend the money even if I had to. Fuck it.

LatestDude !!nEftABMoF replied with this 15 years ago, 5 minutes later, 45 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #203,418

@203,410 (E)
No. Pirates like to say "it's not stealing, it's copying," usually without realizing that's exactly what Intellectual Property rights cover. You legally own the car and TV. You don't legally own music or software; how could you? You didn't make it. You are allowed to use a copy of the IP someone else owns.

@previous (Ks !KansasxqvM)
They're not "losing" money. They're not making money. I don't know what you do for a living, but I have a feeling you would care more if the world insisted upon doing what you do for no compensation whatsoever*. "You like to create things? Fuck you. I deserve your hours of work and love for free."

*I am aware that this is a logically fallacious appeal to emotion and will attempt to elaborate otherwise if someone doesn't accept this as a legitimate response.

Popular films still bring in over a billion dollars, just in theaters, not to mention merchandising etc. Your arguments are based on emotion and companies not making money. The emotional argument you're entitled to, that's your opinion, but films, music, games etc, still make money... that kinda makes the only substantial part of your argument invalid imo.

The license to use it is yours, and yours alone. This is literally, exactly what IP rights control. Your choice to distribute it as you'd like.

Does it matter if I do? Does the size of a company matter in this argument? Many films/music/games companies that started small just a few years ago are booming right now. Your argument was "They're not making money", and that is simply not true at all. The basis of you're argument is invalid.

No one is preventing you from sharing IP exactly how you would share your car or TV: with anyone in the same general vicinity as you. You'd need some really good goddamn speakers to play whatever music you buy to everyone in the world.

Alternatively: you presumably only share your car or TV with your friends. You are not friends with every single person on the internet who doesn't want to pay for the creative work they enjoy.

I never claimed they shouldn't be... I never even implied it. I will say it's not the consumers responsibility to figure out how they do that. The market has literally been adapting to change since the phonograph was invented. All the same arguments have been made for the last hundred years, yet companies have not only survived, they have thrived.

> "They're not "losing" money. They're not making money"
Those kinda balance each other out don't they? Nothing lost? Keep in mind, in the scenario I mentioned I wouldn't buy stuff if I had to. I'll literally just do without. How is this actively hurting companies?

I'm really struggling as far as trying to explain this concept. What do you want people to do for a living? How do you want people to actually make money? You would "share" any IP, your car, your TV, presumably every piece of furniture in your house... You could clone and share food, so the food industry in general is out. Your sink gets clogged? Download a new sink or pipes for free.

How do you want people to make their living? The only things left that I can imagine consist of being a doctor, scientist or lawyer, seeing as how you would presumably not be able to download intelligence. Or, apparently, empathy.

What in god's name is left? I'm going to make a wild assumption and guess that you use Adblock Plus (or something similar). Let's cover: you don't want to pay for anything, and you don't support them making money from people who aren't you. Unless you're a hardcore communist who wants everything to be a free-for-all, there aren't many things left.

LatestDude !!nEftABMoF replied with this 15 years ago, 4 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #203,510

"Intelligence" was used in this case to imply "knowledge of something." I'm not saying that they're more intelligent than anyone else, I'm saying that they're intelligent regarding at least one thing they enjoy and that they can make a career out of.

And, yes; if you're in the same unfulfulling, dead-end job and don't care enough to either expand enough on what you are good at and enjoy, or find something you're good at and enjoy, that is the very definition of "unmotivated." Your life sucks and you don't care. If you don't care enough to make your life better, neither do I. And for the record, I support these people anyway; some of these people are the plumbers and fast food cooks of the world. I don't steal food.
