They all believed in something.

The victors like to demonize those they conquered, but how often do you hear about how one "monster" wiped out vision problems in his country. Or how a barbarian dated challenge the ruling ethnic minority that had exploited his people for centuries. Stalin might be the only irredeemable one you've mentioned.
