They have been married 34 years. What do?
I’m a bit irritated at my dad over this. His father did the same thing at a similar point in his marriage. My dad has never been much of a father figure, aside from keeping the family financially secure. Last night, when he called, he asked about my mom. I abruptly ended the call and told him I’m not his messenger.
Do I just need to turn emo and get a lot of ugly tattoos, now?

Nope. My dad had never been terribly emotional but he has become even more emotionally distant in the past ~8 years. I’m sure neither was cheating, but it’s clear that he wasn’t emotionally invested.

Wow bud... :/
After a lifetime of marriage, you'd think he'd have some damn solid reasons behind the split, but maybe not, maybe its just some mid-life crisis kinda thing and that makes it pretty hard to swallow.
I suppose the only thing to do is be supportive of your mother while maintaining a somewhat decent relationship with your dad, try not to get sucked into taking sides etc. I guess. I dunno, I almost didn't even respond to this thread, I divorced my wife myself and I haven't spoken to my dad in years.

I think the most important thing to do is to make every attempt to avoid picking sides. Be the mediator between them whenever possible; if that fails, just try to get out of the situation without too much bias. You'll really want to maintain contact with both of your parents, even if it doesn't seem like it now.

Have you talked to your father about the divorce?

Yeah. Thanks. I’m going maintain the little contact I have, and I’ll avoid sides.
I‘ll bite my tongue, as I’m just feeling pissy about it all.

By shaving her snatch crying, speaking to her kids on the phone, gardening, and spending time with her dogs.
Apparently she contacted a divorce attorney, today.

I'm not trying to sound like a dick but I'm sure your dad has his reasons. Not saying it's right or anything. Just keep doing what you're doing.

Oh, sure. They don’t really do much together or have common interests. They’ve just been growing apart.

If they divorce, how d'you think this'll affect everything? How will your parents be affected, and their kids, and everyone else?
From the above posts, it doesn't seem like they're constantly fighting and a divorce will make things better, just like...they're growing apart and it'll be fine.

This + ain't you grown up and living on your own.
People drift apart, better a clean break up then tearing up each other into worse.

I get the feeling this won't leave his mother in a very good position... probably at an age when she should be nearing retirement and spend her time with hobbies, friends, and grandchildren. Divorce is mostly a bum deal for the family created around the marriage.

Depends on what his parents are like and how the divorce happens.
She may be well able to support herself afterwards, or she may be fucked. Or she may be the kind that could support herself but keeps asking for money anyways.

Decent points. The kids are all moved out and the parents aren’t fighting each other or manipulating my siblings and myself. It’ll be a clean enough break, but it’s just an odd thought, for me. I assumed they’d be together till death.

She’s an RN with seniority and is certified as fluent in Spanish. She’ll survive quite well on her own ;-) Dad’s a CPA and partner in his firm, too, so there’s a metric shitload of money for them to split

So it'll all be good, don't worry about it. Ask them to think it through a while - it may just be your father having something like a midlife crisis.
If they really are growing apart, it's better for them to divorce; if they stay together, strife may be caused or they might just get...cold to each other. Or they may be fine, it's hard to tell.
Either way, it's all good, man, don't worry about it.
