If it's for "serious" writing, look into Scrivener. There's also Dabble which bills itself "Scrivener minus the learning curve", but I think Scrivener is far more popular (here's some autistic discussion on Reddit). There's also Ulysses which I know nothing about.
I think these are the 'big three'. They all cost, IIRC.
For everything else just use Word, or Google Docs if you need collaboration or don't want to spend anything.

I was apprehensive about taking the plunge with my Smart Typewriter, but I couldn't be happier that I did! The simplicity, but at the same time such a thoughtful design, has reawakened my love for writing. Will it ever get published? I doubt it. But will I be enjoying the distraction-free sojourn with my beloved Typewriter? You betcha!
