I'm not a light beer fan but if you're hanging out with mates and you intend to make it last then light beers are a lot better at that than spirits and stronger drinks. The sheer volume of liquid forces you to pace yourself.

And yeah definitely, even in the UK with our alcohol taxes etc., if you just want to get smashed then spirits are always the way to go. There used to be a UK equivalent of https://getdrunknotfat.com that also included price+tax, but I can't find it. Much younger me relied on it when my idea of a night out was a park bench and cider or 35cl Smirnoff.
