Do you call people Ma’am and Sir to be polite?

Calling someone "sir" when they haven't been knighted- that's most people- is a felony.

If you want a royal guard to spike you for conspiracy to impersonate a knight then, by all means, call someone sir.

Most just stick with mate or cunt.

Seriously? So if a guy drops his wallet, you don't say, "Excuse me, Sir, but you dropped your wallet."? What do you call him? And a woman?

"Hey mate, is this yours?" *gestures to wallet*

"Oi, you clumsy cunt, your wallet slipped out"

etc.

If you called him a sir, and he wasn't, you could end up in the dungeons under the city.

Come over and flaunt the traditional system, but don't say you weren't warned.

Respect the cultures of the places you visit.

You can worship celebrities, and pretend to be a knight at a mediaeval faire. No one's stopping you.

Just keep it in the states.

I not asking or saying anything about that. I am simply asking whether Brits say Sir and Ma’am, and in what circumstances.

They do not say sir in most circumstances.

They do say Ma'am. This used to be reserved for women, but as of recently is now something you can call anyone apparently.

No, we just say "excuse me" as we're polite and don't want to assume gender. Or we just half inch in.
