Is is true that, in England, you can just walk across farmers' fields as if they are public land, open and close their gates, etc.?

There are some paths which the public have a right to access and might go through a farmers field but no, you can't just walk through private land

How many of these open paths give a citizen the right to walk through a private potato farm?
