I have a hard time reading something if the characters have a thick accent that is written out. For example, in Trainspotting everyone has thickass, written accents.
I feel it's a shame because Im sure I would like that book

I don't have that problem with Trainspotting (Scottish dialect is easy for me) but I recently finished Dombey and Son by Dickens and there's a character in there, a navy captain, who is unintelligible to me because of his insanely thick accent and frequent nautical terminology gibberish.
I also struggled with Mark Twain's stuff due to the southern accents.
