As a love letter to voracious capitalism it's great, yes. I especially love the part where "God" destroys literally every shrimping boat in the sea except Forrest and Lieutenant Dan's, thus enabling them to establish an unchallenged monopoly. Never mind everyone else who lost their livelihood. USA! USA!

I've read the original one by Winston Groom (didn't know there's a series of them). It struck me as being a satire of all the things the Godawful film unironically celebrates.
