Topic: Why doesn't anyone use SI prefixes when it comes to meters?

Anonymous A started this discussion 2 years ago #111,693

Why would you ever say "2000 km" or "2000 kilometers"?

It ought to be "2 Mm" or "2 megameters".

Thanks.

We hear of the millimeter, the micrometer, the nanometer, and sometimes the picometer, but never the megameter, gigameter, or terameter.

The metric system is for total faggots.

Because then you'd have to say like it's 2,55154 Mm between here and there

Unlikely you'd need to use that number of significant figures.

2.6 megameters would probably do unless you're writing a scientific paper.

I mean if you're driving somewhere you'd like to know if it's 2610 km or 2690. Mm are only useful for like circumpherences of planets

Rarely have I seen real-world situations outside of a scientific context where a <3% error makes a difference. And your example is not one of them. You have way more error due to random variations in traffic, number and duration of rest stops, weather, and so on.

What's the advantage of using a less precise unit requiring decimals to be even slightly useful?? Why would you say 2.6 megameters instead of 2600km?
