Topic: You know how Europeans get annoyed when Americans claim...

Anonymous A started this discussion 2 years ago #111,526

...I'm Irish! or I'm a third English, a quarter German, etc.? Well, what if two, say, Italians from Italy immigrate to the US. they have a child there. That child is raised in an Italian household through and through. Their nationality is American, sure, and their citizenship, but they are Italian linguistically, culturally, culinarily, etc. Why can't they claim to be of Italian descent and be proud of it?

Because fat white Americans from Louisiana are not French, Cajun, or anything else but fat white Americans. And no amount of hypotheticals will ever change that. Especially those that have English occupational surnames

Could you answer the actual question instead of ranting about your obsession like you always do? That, or just stay out of the thread.

Obsession about what?

Just because you don't like my answer doesn't mean that I didn't answer your question.

It means I'm researching scumbags who try to defraud war-torn countries. It's my intellectual work.

Then they would be American with Italian parents. Anything given birth by that child would simply be American.

I'm amazed this is even a thing. You yanks Love to stick your stupid flag on literally everything so why can't any of you just say "I'm American" and leave it at that?

But if they grew up in a household where literally everything was Italian, why can't they enjoy their Italian ethnicity and culture?

They can. They just don't need to constantly introduce themselves as "Italian American"

Is it possible that the race/identity/national situation in the US is much more complicated than in the UK?

It really is. See, the only true "American" culture is Native American. Anyone else is a recent immigrant, and there are so many immigrants from so many cultures, that we tend to be proud of what makes us distinct.

Are you saying black people can't trace their history because they don't have any? Sounds pretty racist.

That’s kind of how it works, yes. Black people had their history striped from them and they don’t have the luxury of tracing their roots back to Africa. The colonization of the Africa continent made it even tougher too. Black history in the U.S. 🇺🇸 can only be dated back to the slave trade out of Africa with the only certainty being that Nigeria 🇳🇬 was involved in the capture and selling of African slaves.
