is that it is poor grammar. I'm all for civil rights and such, but no, no, no, I can not abide poor grammar. Certainly they meant "awake" yes? I mean that's the correct adjective form that I gather was meant by the usage.

The last line of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird has always pissed me off for this very reason.

“He turned out the light and went into Jem's room. He would be there all night, and he would be there when Jem waked up in the morning"


You write a flawless masterpiece for 300 pages only to bollocks up literally the last verb of the novel.

Possibly but it's the only instance of an irregular verb being made regular in the entire book. It's jarring is all.
